Improving Fitness
Fitness: a definition
The
word fitness is somewhat subjective. We may see a variety of different
people and deem them as being fit. We call a marathon runner fit for
his or her ability to run an extremely long distance at a fairly rapid
rate. We may call a rugby player dodging, stepping and making tackles
in the NRL and term him as fit.
Go down to the local athletics track and see all the athletes
sprinting the 100m or throwing the shot put and the word fitness once
again comes to mind. However, all these different sports require
different forms of fitness.
A rugby league player needs to be strong, agile or maybe fast. A
marathon runner needs to have good stamina and endurance and sprinters
and throwers need power and strength.
A few popular types of fitness are aerobic fitness, anaerobic fitness,
agility and power. These forms of fitness are to some degree quite
variant and to achieve fitness in one the these areas requires
differing forms of training.
Power
Possibly the best way to improve power is through weight training. If
done correctly, weight training will improve the amount of power your
muscles have through increasing the number of fast twitch muscle fibers
in those muscles. If you are aiming to achieve power, then your weight
sessions should be done using a good deal of weight in fast
repetitions.
When aiming to improve power, you should undertake any form of activity (i.e pushups, chinups, sitsups etc.) at a rapid rate.
Aerobic Fitness
Running, cycling and swimming are all great
ways of improving your aerobic fitness. You can observe information on
